Pattern Details

Makoti is the name for a bride in South Africa and the skirt is a symbol of being a newlywed in tribal customs, but it has crossed over into regular South African fashion as well. THIS IS NOT A PATTERN. It is a set of instructions that accompanies pre-printed Shweshwe skirt panels. You cut the pre-printed Shweshwe panels along the dotted lines, stitch together, add a waistband and button hole and you have a stylish comfortable wraparound skirt. You choose the number of skirt panels you need, so sizing is easy.

Based in Canada, I am a wholesaler and retailer of Shweshwe, 100% cotton printed fabric from South Africa. Shweshwe is similar to vintage calico, and it's production dates back to the industrial revolution, when it was made in England and shipped to the colonies, but after Apartheid ended, a South African company purchased the production and design rights. Besides producing classic Shweshwe prints in indigo, red and brown, they have modern prints as well. Visit my website to learn more about this beloved fabric, which is called the "Tartan of South Africa".
