Learn to create a gorgeous custom-fit skirt with guipure lace! Meet couturière Susan Khalje and get started by going over the tools and materials you'll need, including how to choose the correct pattern size and yardage for your project.
Discover the importance of the toile, or fitting muslin, in couture sewing. You'll learn to cut, baste, and adjust the toile, then deconstruct and refine it to use as your final pattern.
Susan teaches you how to cut, mark, and baste the cotton underlining to the silk charmeuse fashion fabric so that the two behave as one layer.
Start constructing your skirt by partially sewing the side seams and hand-stitching the hem.
It's important to consider carefully the placement of the lace overlay. Susan explains how to position your lace for flattering results, and hand-tack the lace to the fashion fabric underlayer.
In this lesson you'll see how to sew and press the darts, keeping the lace free.
Follow along as Susan demonstrates how to shape and overlap the lace to match the contours of your skirt.
Once your center-back seam is sewn, see how to insert a hand-picked zipper at the center back, and conceal it with a lace appliqué for a flawless finish.
Your skirt is almost complete! Learn to insert a silk crepe de Chine lining with a jump pleat for added comfort and wearing ease. Plus, get tips on managing lace and lining if your skirt pattern has a slit at the back.
Finish your skirt by joining all four layers at the waist, then shape and attach a petersham ribbon waist facing. Susan wraps up class by showcasing a couple of stunning guipure projects as further inspiration.
