6 FREE Bag Patterns for Totes, Purses and More

Fabric bags are such a handy item and you can never have too many! Whether you are heading out on vacation or running errands around town, a wardrobe of bags and totes makes it easy to grab and go. You can keep a few in the car for shopping and they make great gifts. Plus you can use some fun fabric scraps from your stash for just this kind of project. They can be on the small side for just your personal items or extra-large to carry all the necessities for a travel excursion.

Here are six great bag patterns to kickstart your creativity:

1. The Arabesque Bag

This beginner-friendly bag has a zip-top closure and two top-stitched pockets on the inside of the bag. It goes together quickly as it just has a front and back, but includes bottom gussets that give the bag a 4″ depth. Instructions to apply the optional ribbon trim are included.

2. The Swoon Ethel Tote Bag

This is a roomy, sturdy and stylish open tote bag. With a teardrop shape, Ethel veers away from the usual boxy tote. It’s a “stuff it in and run out the door” kind of bag, designed to comfortably sling over your shoulder. Use two fabrics to accent the interesting shape of this bag.

3. The Lined Canvas Tote

This pattern includes step-by-step directions on how to sew a fully lined canvas tote bag with an outer pocket and reinforced bottom. The handles wrap around the bottom so this bag can take a lot of weight. Use outdoor fabrics and your bag will stand up to a lot of use.
