Flock Together Dreamcatcher Quilt

This was a fun quilt to make! I was hoping it would help me with half square triangles. Sometimes you get so interested in blocks that you forget about triangles.

Q&A with Debbie DeFelice

PATRICIAE5201732 asked:
How do you get the nine birds block to the correct size. Following the directions there is no way to trim the block and maintain the HSTs. I think I may have to trim each HST, but I can't figure out the math!!!! please provide direction.
Debbie DeFelice answered:
I understand your question because when I read the pattern I was a little confused. Here is what I did to correct the problem for the 9 half triangles. When I cut my fabric from the fat quarter I made sure I turned it measured 21x 18 (instead of 18 by 21) my first block I cut was 11 1/2 for the 10 5/8 sq , so that I had enough to cut the 2 (5 3/4)sqs . Then cut your (2) rows of 4 1/8 and be careful, you need 1 (2 1/2) strip . With batik fabric and this pattern I did not cut off the salvage end until I had marked it and knew I had enough fabric. Hope that helps you!
PATRICIAE5201732 asked:
I am trying to figure out what to do with the squares made with the HST made from the 4 1/8 squares. If assembled into a group of nine, it can not be trimmed to a 9 3/4 square without loosing points. What do I need the nine squares (light/dark small birds) to be trimmed to before assembling them into the large block. When I do the math, it comes out a bit larger or smaller.
Debbie DeFelice answered:
I confused now, so I took my quilt out and measure my HST block and it’s 9 3/4 so I am sorry I don’t have the answer. With the 1/4 inch seam allow , I sewed it to my rows and got the block to measure correctly. Maybe Craftsy can help!
