This pattern is designed to honor military members for their service. The pattern treats the center star as one huge nine-patch block and goes together quickly. The pattern includes techniques for making half-square triangles eight at a time, and flying geese four at a time. The finished size of 78" x 78" is somewhat deceptive. That size reflects the top before layering, quilting, and washing. Because I'm a dense quilter I deliberately added the outer border to bump up the size from 72 to 78 inches. I lose about 3 inches to quilting and another 3 inches to washing (washing is a Quilt of Valor requirement). So MY actual finished size ended up being 72 x 72. If you pre-wash your fabrics and do a simple overall quilting pattern you can eliminate the outer 3-inch border to comply with QOV guidelines (max QOV size is 72 x 90). It's a striking pattern when done. My husband, who served in the Air Force, loves it.
