Our First Quilt-Along: Meet the Flower Basket Quilt

Our spring Quilt-Along kicks off this month, and the star of the show is Kate Colleran’s lovely Flower Basket quilt.

Flower Basket Quilt

About the Flower Basket Quilt

It all started with the fabric. Inspired by the Boundless Rosemoor collection, Kate opted for a traditional design that shows off the fabric’s floral aesthetic.

“I chose a medallion style that would allow me to create unique smaller blocks that build up to a strong design element,” Kate says. “I love this style of quilt because the overall design draws you closer, and you can really enjoy the fabrics as you look at each block.”

With only three blocks in the whole design, it’s easier to make than it looks!

Flower Basket Blocks

The larger half-square triangle blocks highlight the rosy fabrics, while still providing an eye-catching design element. And, they give you a chance to practice before you have to make all the small ones that line up together in the basket block.

Kate adds movement to the quilt with chain blocks. “I knew I wanted to teach this traditional block and show you how to make it more quickly by using strip piecing,” Kate says.

The really fun part? You can arrange the blocks in many different ways to easily customize your design. In fact, you can make a queen-size quilt or a twin-size quilt with a coordinating wall hanging.

What size is this quilt??

The pattern included with the kit comes with two size options: Either a queen-size quilt (92” x 92”) or a twin-size quilt and coordinating wall hanging.

I’d be in on this if the class were offered separately.

Oh well.

Is the video like the Crafty BOM which gives step by step instructions and a beginner could follow along???? I really like the pattern and fabric but not sure a beginner could do it.

Hi Anna,
This is a little different from a BOM, but between the thorough pattern and Kate’s video tips, you’ll have plenty of guidance for creating the quilt. Plus, there are only three blocks to learn, all made with beginner-friendly techniques.

There are only three types of blocks in the quilt, and I think each is 10″ square finished (10.5″ before joining). It should be possible to break down the three blocks into patterns given those dimensions and the picture. The art seems to be in the arranging of them and the fabric choice. And how cool is it that something this beautiful only takes three kinds of blocks!

Such a beautiful quilt!! I wish my budget would allow purchasing the kit. Even at the great sale price, still can’t.

Sure wish we could get just the pattern. It is a beautiful quilt. I just want to use my fabric stash.

I would LOVE to be able to view the videos w/o purchasing a kit….any chance? Thanks!

Would love to get the pattern. I feel like buying the kit stifles individual creativity. The quilt has someone else’s personality and all those quilts become clones.

Love this coordinated pattern fabric and classes. Did not need yet another project where I am employed 7 days a week but simply could not miss this carefully thought out craftsy opportunity.
Thank you, Craftsy!
