UJAMAA GRANDMAS, a volunteer group of over 500 Calgary-based women, is part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The Foundation works to address the consequences of the HIV/AIDS pandemic upon families and communities in sub-Saharan Africa. As part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, UJAMAA GRANDMAS is committed to the Campaign’s three goals: to raise awareness to build solidarity and to mobilize funds for community-based organizations that support African grandmothers and the children in their care. Since 2004, UJAMAA GRANDMAS has donated over $1,150,000 in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, through a variety of activities, both handcrafts-related and other. BAG-ETTES is a sub-set of UJAMAA GRANDMAS, raising funds through the sale of patterns and finished products. Proceeds from the sale of BAG-ETTES patterns are used to offset some of the costs of bag production and the remainder is sent directly to the Foundation to support our African sisters. BAG-ETTES sell their bags at the UJAMAA GRANDMAS annual BAGS, BABIES & BEYOND SALE in Calgary, Alberta. It is our privilege to able to help these very courageous women and at the same time to express ourselves through our creativity. Your support of our efforts is greatly appreciated.
