Meet artist Robert Carsten and broaden your understanding of color theory with a discussion of hue, temperature, value and saturation. You'll learn how to mix warm and cool versions of each color, create a value scale to guide you in your painting and discover two ways to desaturate colors.
Use reference photos as your guide to creating a strong composition, and thumbnail sketches to determine the best size and orientation for your painting. Learn how your choices influence how the viewer's eye moves through your piece. Finish this lesson by creating a value study that will prepare you for blocking in your painting.
Get to work on your canvas by first learning to recreate accurate proportions and angles in your line drawing. Next, wash in your first layer of paint. Along the way, you'll find out how to use your value scale to ensure you've accurately blocked in the right values throughout your composition.
Robert shows how to add details and refine your color without destroying your large value shapes. You'll learn to mix and strategically apply warm and cool colors throughout your painting to create a sense of depth. Pick up tips for using the angle of your brushstrokes to gently guide the viewer through your composition, such as a mountainscape.
Add the finishing details to your mountain landscape. Start by using an opaque, thickened layer of paint to add texture to your foreground and trees. Then, use a glazing medium to create a transparent effect on the lake and mountains. Finally, combine both opaque and transparent layers in your clouds for a luminous finish.
Wrap up by learning some advanced techniques for developing bold colors in your paintings. Robert walks you through examples of applying his 3-2-1 color theory and shows how toned grounds can affect the final look. Finally, learn how changes to your underpainting can warm up or cool down your finished piece.
