Pattern Details

This sock pattern, written for four sizes, is inspired by the Swedish man's garment, the Ullared, of the late 19th century. These Ullared socks include the Two-color Double Cast-on, tips on adding horizontal stripes in ribbing, the traditional dotted diamond motifs of the Ullared, and the "Auto" heel and Star toe shaping. FEATURED TECHNIQUES The Two-color Double Cast-on Striped Ribbing Knitting With a Yarn In Each Hand The Auto Heel A photograph, theory boxes, a chart and schematic are included. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Ability to work two colors in a round with double-pointed needles, Magic Loop, or two circulars GAUGE In 2-color stockinette stitch on size US 0 (2.0 mm) ndls: 8 stitches/10 rounds/ inch SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Circumference of sock leg: Small (6.75"), Medium (8.25"), Large (9.75"), Extra Large (11.25")

Recommended with this pattern

  • Yarn: Sport weight wool (100 g/246 yards per skein): 1(1, 1, 2) skeins of Main Color yarn (MC- darker yarn), 1 skein of Contrasting Color yarn (CC- lighter yarn). For a lighter weight sock, use sock (fingering weight) yarn
  • Needles: One set each of US 0 and 1 (2.0 and 2.25 mm) double-pointed ndls, or size needed to obtain gauge
