Under the weather? Need a day on the sofa? Go digging in your stash and entertain yourself with an interesting-but-not-too challenging pattern. Only basic knitting skills required: as long as you can knit and purl and increase and decrease, you'll be fine. It's helpful if the decongestant you're taking leaves your head clear enough to count stitches and rows, too. Based loosely on Elizabeth Zimmermann's eyelet Pi shawl design, this is a quicker-to-knit and easier-to-wear semicircular half-Pi shawl. It's eminently modifiable - use whatever yarn and needles you have at hand. Something worsted weight or heavier, on needles 5mm (US #8) or larger. More yarn makes a larger shawl without modifications. Easy. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Knit, purl, increase and decrease GAUGE 16 sts and 20 rows = approximately 4 inches in stockinette st, after blocking Gauge isn't critical, as long as you like the fabric. Working at a tighter gauge will result in a smaller piece. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Sample worked at gauge below measures 58 inches across, 29 inches deep. SUGGESTED YARN 500 yards of Worsted weight

Recommended with this pattern

  • 400-500m heavy worsted, aran or chunky weight yarn
  • 5.5mm-6mm needles - whichever size you have on hand; a longer circular is easiest, but straights will do in a pinch.
  • A needle 2-3 sizes larger, for binding off.
