Q&A with Meredith Arnold

kkhull3558870 asked:
Love the colors, patina(?) on this piece. You are a great teacher!
Meredith Arnold answered:
The colored patterns are created on this piece using embossing powders and a heat gun. It's a process normally used on paper with rubber stamps, ink and then embossing powder. A very fun way to play with color and patterns!
kkhull3558870 asked:
Wow...that is a neat way to add color. I've used embossing powders with rubber stamps/cards. Thanks for the info. I'll have to try this process because it's beautiful.
Meredith Arnold answered:
I think you'll love it! It works really well. Just do what you normally do on paper onto metal - nothing special or different to do. Embossing powders are a thermoplastic resin. Resins are an adhesive so it will stay on no problem! Have fun and post some pix. I would love to see where you go with that. The powders were originally to be part of this class but there was just too much info for the formatted timeline.
kkhull3558870 asked:
I never thought of embossing powders being thermoplastic resin! I have lots of them too, so can't wait to try them on metal. I took an etching class years ago, so will try to add those into some jewelry projects. My art room is a "wreck" now as I moved back to my mountain house, so need to get busy having fun. I'm retired now. YAY...more art Thanks so much for teaching this class. I love it, and your happy attitude/knowledge inspires me.
Meredith Arnold answered:
I know about that wreck thing! It just means you have inventory and art requires inventory! :) I think you'll go crazy on that embossing powder thing - I know I have. I absolutely love it. You made my day! Thank YOU for that!
kkhull3558870 asked:
Great comment about "art inventory." That's a more "positive" way of looking at my messy "art areas." I was afraid to use the embossing powders on the etched piece (made from a previous class), but will try them soon. I'm having SO MUCH FUN with all my Craftsy classes! It's my "happy place."
Meredith Arnold answered:
Did you know that embossing powders were originally created to coat metal? Enjoy!
kkhull3558870 asked:
I didn't know that embossing powders were created to coat metal. I'm definitely going to try using them soon. Thanks for the great information.
Meredith Arnold answered:
A great resource for embossing powders is Lindy's Stamp Gang. Lots of colors, including translucent which are hard to find. Enjoy!
