Rose of Sharon Hibiscus

Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. Hi Cynthia, Here is my first project. I wish I had drawn the flower using a grid. I didn't, and ended up erasing the drawing so many times I had lines and wear on my paper. The reference photo on my Mac made the flower look very bleached out and I did not even realize the there was so much pink and blue in the flower until I saw other people's projects. I had a look at the reference photo on an older laptop I have that uses windows and the colours on the reference photo looked completely different. By then I had worked on my flower so much I had hardly any tooth left on the paper. I am not that happy with how it turned out although it looks better in person then it does in the photo. I used Prismacolor pencils, a few Polychromos pencils and a bit of my Derwent China White drawing pencil. The paper I used is Strathmore mixed media 400 series. I used Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner on the background after my first layer of black and then coloured 3 more layers of pencil using Tuscan Red, Black Grape and another layer of Black. I did learn a lot from this and hope that my next project turns out better. Thank you for the great lesson. Is the piece for sale? No What are you most proud of? That I persevered as it took me so long to do. I did not give up trying to make it work.

Q&A with Carla 58

DeanaR asked:
I think you did a good job. It does look like a white flower and pretty. Keep up the good work. :)
Carla 58 answered:
Thank you Deana. It is very nice of you to comment on my flower and I appreciate it very much:)
judyvan66 asked:
best way to print the photos from the web
Carla 58 answered:
I am not happy with how photos print up using my printer so I use my iPad as reference when I am painting.
Cynthia Knox asked:
Carla, I absolutely love this! A couple days ago I wrote a response here to you. Did you receive that? If not, will re-do. 😊
Carla 58 answered:
Hi Cynthia, I'm so sorry I did not respond to your lovely comments on my project sooner. I thought it was an error as I did your class and this project nearly 3 years ago:) I have come a long way since then and had really learned a lot from your wonderful class. Thank you so much for writing to me. I hope all is well with you:)
Cynthia Knox asked:
Thanks for your quick response, Carla! As you know, Craftsy has become Bluprint. I was just notified that your project was posted (!) and did not have a way to date-check it. My apologies! And thank you for being such an awesome student. Your completed project is gorgeous. :)
Carla 58 answered:
That is okay Cynthia, it was lovely to hear from you again:) I hope all is well with you and your family. Have a great weekend.
