Rose Drawing

Rose drawing on Strathmore 300 drawing paper with Faber-Castell colored pencils. I realized after I had started that my image was a bit ambitious, but I persisted, and I definitely learned along the way! I appreciated the texture that comes with drawing paper, but I'm going to try out several papers to see which ones I like best with the pencils. This is my first colored pencil drawing in quite some time, so I'd love to hear suggestions/feedback!

Q&A with jocelyncb78

Cynthia Knox asked:
Jocelyn, this is absolutely gorgeous! So photorealistic and perfect. The petal veins are exceptional, and your colors are incredibly well transitioned and smooth. Do you have any WIPs to post for us? I can't tell from my computer screen how your background was rendered - very black and smooth. Did you use watercolor pencils or a solvent? Great job!
jocelyncb78 answered:
Thank you, Cynthia! I have a TON of WIP's...I took a photo every few petals, so I could see my progress & stay motivated. I didn't think of uploading them when I posted the project, but I will definitely add a few! The black background is entirely colored pencil. I used Prismacolor Art Stix & touched up with my colored pencil. I have at least 5-6 layers on there - I'd color a few layers, seal it with fixatif, and color a few more. It was a ton of work, but well worth it! I just purchased some odorless mineral spirits & I'm going to give that a try on my current piece!
Cynthia Knox asked:
So proud of you, Jocelyn! And thank you for those WIPs. Helpful and inspiring to see your progression throughout this project. The time you took to create such a beautiful piece has been worth it. You have done a remarkable job, and I look forward to seeing more from you!
