I was enthralled with Alexandria Pellegrino's Baroque cakes, so when 'golden' opportunity came for Golden cake I couldn't wait. I was also inspired by a cake by KeKouture with cupids holding ribbons. My cake was three tiers of "Italian marble" fondant with gum paste heart, butterflies, ribbon, rosebuds, 23K gold acanthus leaves and an icing sheet placard. Humidity was high so had to resort to drying gum paste in a lit but unheated oven. The major challenge was building an armature for the bound hearts and butterflies. I loved producing the engraving of cupids with a grocery store icing sheet— typically those sheets are a poor color blurry shot of a football player or mickey mouse.
